Keeping Kids Focused In School Between Thanksgiving And Winter Break

Last weekend I ended up on an unexpected trip to the hospital. My young daughter had a cup of coffee, and it was one of those cups that comes ready-made, like from a vending machine where the milk is powdered and already in it; and it comes extremely hot.

So, back to survival. The way our society is configured, we appear to be in a race to the bottom. From a young age we are subtly taught that the way to ‘win’ at this game of life is to trample on whoever competes with us and win at all costs. Newspapers and magazines offer us daily competitions. People part with money every week in the desperate hope of winning the lottery. Companies set sales quotas and monthly targets; sports have league tables to measure performance. All these have their formative origins in regular school tests and BISE Peshawar 1st Year result results, winning the individual sports events and the team games. Even the million dollar performance bonuses paid to brokers and fund managers cause discord when one broker doesn’t receive as much as another.

About two weeks later we turned up at the army careers office. Michael seemed excited and confident, looking around in amazement at all the pictures on the walls depicting adventure and action. I was asked into the office alone for a moment. Here I was told that Michael had no chance of becoming an avionics tech with his predicted grades. This really upset me but the Sergeant Major then informed me that he would fix the situation “Army style”. I had an idea of what he meant so I went along exams results with it.

I vividly remember the interviewer asked me how to find out how much energy the cup of coffee standing on his desk would give him. It took me a while to start with. Even though I managed to make a start; I was clearly not progressing well to find the solution. After much waiting, the professor slowly guided me step after step on how I can solve the problem. At the end, with the help of the professor, I managed to come up with an answer. It was not a pleasant experience, but I learnt a lot. For me, this experience taught me even every body has a chance to gain a place in Oxford, not every one is qualified to be there. It took a high level of competencies, knowledge and sometimes luck.

Upon hearing his news, I was left wondering what a fool the company had been, and how cruel the decision was. Ironically, it was the same company that I accepted an offer from to further my A-levels study abroad a few years after that.
